Step out for spring in washed out neons

Any self-confessed fashion fan worth her salt will have realised just how huge the trend for brights is going to be over the next few months. So how can you stop yourself looking like a clone of every other colourful shopper on the street?
With washed out neons, that's how. No, your eyes do not deceive you: neon is a brave choice for anyone not still living in the 80s, but you can tone it down by investing in one of the many softer shades available right now.
At Diane Von Furstenberg's spring/summer show, electric pastels were all the rage. A jazzed up coral column dress was an interesting twist on a colour that's been doing the rounds for the past couple of seasons, while muted lime green underskirts gave all-white outfits a mouth-wateringly zingy lift.
Designer Jil Sander revisited some of the shades used in the spring collection last year, giving us strong blues and pinks that looked as though they had been left out in the rain.
"I wanted to add another dimension to the neons and thought that washing out some of those vivid colours would add an interesting contrast," said Jil.
Rather than hesitating over whether or not you think you can pull off neon, have a paddle at the shallow end with bright accessories. Anya Hindmarch has brought out a range of washbags in muted neons, while Cacharel has produced belts in softly glowing sorbet shades.
If you're ready to wade in to deeper waters, try out a bright yellow clutch bag from Celine or fluorescent turquoise jacket from Rag and Bone.
The important thing to remember with neons is not to overdo it. A crisp white shirt with a bright skirt or rainbow-hued trench coat with pale cigarette pants will look far more chic than throwing on every single colour you can find.
