Anya Hindmarch named businesswoman of the year

We've lusted after her bags for years, and now Anya Hindmarch has got the recognition she deserves by being named businesswoman of the year by Veuve Clicquot.
The designer has been creating handbags since the age of 19 and became a household name with her I'm Not A Plastic Bag everyday tote in 2007, which was sold in four limited edition colours for £5 and was selected by Vanity Fair to be put in its branded goodie bags for the Oscars ceremony, sparking eBay sales which saw the shoppers reach hundreds of pounds each.
She has cited Margaret Thatcher as an inspiration - and in return the Iron Lady has been an ardent fan of the British designer, with an upcoming exhibition of the former prime minister's belongings set to feature an Anya Hindmarch bag.
"It's rather lovely," Anya told interviewers.
Speaking of her prestigious new accolade, the designer commented: "It is a very real compliment to be deemed to share some of the qualities of Veuve Clicquot herself who was clearly a brave and pioneering woman but also to even be considered amongst my fellow finalists, Helena Morrissey and Ruth Rogers, who are both brilliant businesswomen and lovely people."
Home secretary Theresa May said Anya's work in the fashion industry is an inspiration to other women.
She said: "I congratulate Anya Hindmarch and hope her success inspires budding businesswomen across Britain. Women are at the heart of our economic future and I would like to see many more reaching the top of their chosen field."
The eco-conscious creator of high-end bags has unveiled her current collection, which pays tribute to a number of spring/summer 2012 trends.
Her tricolour straw clutch and basket give a nod to the prevalence of raffia seen on the catwalk at the Burberry Prorsum and Michael Kors shows, while her range of Valorie clutches come in a bright pink, neon orange and electric blue - a perfect accompaniment to the pastel palettes around at the moment.
