How to dress in your forties

Polo Ralph Lauren dress shirt

So you've just blown out the 40 candles on your cake, congratulated yourself for making it to your fifth decade and then it strikes you that you can no longer get away with wearing the clothes you donned in your 20s.

Oh yes, those once artfully fitted band T-shirts now shrink-wrap themselves to your stomach roughly two inches above your navel, while the baggy jeans that were all the rage way back when now make you look like your father.

Daily Mail writer Tom Rawstorne has bemoaned this very phenomenon, reporting that he can't get away with throwing on some clean trousers, a shirt and jumper anymore because they make him look like Cliff Richard.

Comedian John Bishop has also found out the hard way that hanging on to clothes from his youth does not make for sartorial elegance.

"You turn 40 and God starts taking the mick out of you," John told interviewers recently. "You go to bed and wake up fatter than when you went to sleep. It's like God's saying: 'Look at you, losing your confidence with women - here, have some fat'. You even get fat where it's impossible to get fat - you get a fat back. A fat back!"

Luckily for us chaps who are not yet ready to retire with our pipe and slippers, there are plenty of men's designer clothing options out there. A Polo Ralph Lauren shirt can be dressed up for work with a sharply tailored jacket or down for pub drinks with dark blue jeans and a pair of navy boat shoes, while a fine-knit jumper is a great choice for those spring days when there's still a chill in the air.

Above all, forget the 'dad look' - even when you've got sprogs of your own, there's no need to lose your sense of style by turning to paint-splattered sweatshirts, high-waisted trews or peaked caps emblazoned with car marque logos. Basically, if it looks like something any of the Top Gear presenters would be happy wearing, avoid at all costs.
