What to wear to the races

They're a chance for the great and good to mingle and examine each other's sartorial choices while sipping vintage bubbles and nibbling on posh vol au vents, so getting ready for a day at the races can be challenging for any fashionista.
Helpfully - or not, depending on what suits you best - the organisers of Royal Ascot have published a comprehensive guide to acceptable dress for this year's prestigious races.
If you're visiting the Royal Enclosure, strapless dresses, shorts and fascinators are all out this summer, as are frocks that fall above the knee and tops with straps thinner than one inch across.
To help race-goers choose an outfit that won't have the stewards harrumphing at the entrance gate, the racecourse has published a series of images of the model Charlotte Pallister wearing women's designer dresses teamed with hats, shoes and cover-ups for the perfect race look.
In one of the pictures taken by photographer Simon Proctor, the model is seen working a black structural panelled dress by Amanda Wakeley, finishing off the 1950s-style ensemble with wrist-length gloves and a dramatic dome-shaped hat by Stephen Jones.
She is also pictured rocking a monochrome Antonio Berardi number cinched in at the waist with three-quarter length sleeves and long black leather gloves - all topped off with an enormous white and black headpiece.
The Daily Mail reported that the photographs were inspired by Christian Dior's 1950s haute couture look and pay tribute to the famous Dovima with the Elephants image produced by Richard Avedon in 1955.
To get the perfect look for a day at the races, consider going for an outfit that at first looks conservative but then reveals itself to be fashion-forward. This gorgeous flame-coloured maxi dress from Carven is form-fitting without being overly sexy, and capitalises on two of this season's biggest trends: brights and sheer.
If you prefer to invest in a number you can wear to other events, such as a wedding or summer party, try Diane Von Furstenberg's red Maja Two Halo dress featuring a pretty floral print. Accessorise with a disc-shaped headpiece and get ready for your flutter on the horses.
