Clash my prints

The catwalks were full of them, A-listers are loving them and we've even started spotting a couple of people in the street wearing them.
That's right: clashing prints are the hottest trend to come out of the S/S 2012 collections. Now you no longer have to keep your stripes as far from your florals as possible, because mixing it up is the name of the game.
Try Scarlett Johansson's Hollywood Walk of Fame outfit, for example. The blonde bombshell stole her own show in a 1950s-esque skirt and top combo by Preen. The upper half of the look consisted of a ditsy white flower pattern on a black background, while the knee-length pencil skirt featured an abstract checkerboard print.
It worked precisely because it was so unexpected - and the Avengers star pulled the outfit together in a pair of red peeptoe Christian Louboutin heels in another knowing nod to the spring/summer trend of colour blocking.
Another star who's not scared to bare a print or three is Gwen Stefani, who showed off her impressive fashion nous in a houndstooth jacket and pinstripe trousers in LA this week. The stylish 42-year-old teamed the out-there separates with an oversized blue bag and tan wedge ankle boots, which helped break up the monochrome-ness of her outfit.
But, we hear you ask suspiciously, how can you wear clashing prints without looking like a Bananarama reject circa 1985? The only thing we can advise is a big ol' dose of attitude. You have to be brazen about your choices - there is, after all, a fine line between fashion genius and looking like you got dressed in the dark, especially with this trend. But steer clear of anything matchy-matchy; never wear two different horizontal stripes together, and if you want to do head-to-toe florals, play with scale so that you don't look as though you've just wandered out of the Chelsea Flower Show.
Get the look: Pair a grey maxi dress by Marlene Birger with a floral printed jacket and finish off with a snakeskin patterned Anya Hindmarch clutch for on-trend clashing.
