Get the look: Tomboy chic

After several consecutive seasons stuffed full to the brim with flirty dresses, frilly blouses and all manner of girlish heels, it's no wonder that tomboy chic is on its way back in again.
And with Hollywood's favourite androgynous dresser Kristen Stewart being crowned best dressed woman of the year by Glamour magazine, it seems the fashion world is ready to embrace the grunged-down look as a feasible trend.
Kristen was awarded the accolade for her ability to go from "awkward teen to style queen" and for consistently being "effortlessly on-trend" - and even the most feminine among us can learn a lot from the way she pairs separate pieces to come up with a edgy yet workable look.
The Twilight star is not the only A-lister to work tomboy chic - Agyness Deyn made the look her own when she first exploded onto the catwalk a few years ago, while fashion doyenne Vivienne West took great delight in rejecting the stereotypical feminine look when she started designing.
Want to try out the look for yourself? It's remarkably easy to put together. Start with the basics - a silky vest or long-length T-shirt layered underneath a Breton jumper is a cute and quirky way to wear the trend.
Add a pair of shorts or trousers cropped at the ankle and finish up with a masculine tailored blazer for pure androgyny.
Women's designer clothing fans can wear it with flats, trainers or plimsolls if you're really taking the trend to heart, but if you want to keep some of your femininity shining through, add a pair of simple heels - the fewer curved lines you put on, the better you'll pull it off.
Gotham Magazine reckons the tomboy style perfectly encapsulates "confidence, rebelliousness and adventure" and is ideal for women seeking "mobility and freedom without sacrificing femininity or fashion".
Even if you don't want to go the whole hog, it's worth bearing Coco Chanel's advice when getting dressed and always taking off one item before you go out - the first principle behind tomboy chic is simplicity.
