How to put together your summer wardrobe

It finally happened - the return of the sun, just as everyone was wondering how to get their vitamin D fix this year. And were we prepared for it? Of course not!
There was a rumbling noise across Britain as we all searched high and low through our wardrobes for the perfect summer dress or pair of sandals to fling on. Sadly it was to no avail, as we collectively realised that we'd got rid of most of our summer pieces in a fit of pique after last year's washout.
So where do you start with your summer gear? We reckon a capsule wardrobe is the ideal solution to that "What on earth do I wear" scenario so many of us face every morning, so think of a few key pieces you could mix and match for a number of different outfits.
In the office, for example, a printed wrap dress is ideal. It's elegant without being too formal for the warmer weather, and is smart enough to take you from meetings with clients to posh drinks at the bar after work.
Try Diane Von Furstenberg's blue Julian dress featuring three-quarter length sleeves and a tie waist to cinch you in at your narrowest part. It also has a crossover front, meaning you can reveal as much of your decolletage as you wish. Or, if you prefer, the Natalie dress has short loose cap sleeves if you get too hot in longer lengths.
It's also a good idea to have a pretty shirt or blouse that you can dress up or down. Try Alice by Temperley's navy Poppy shirt with a pair of skinny jeans and sandal wedges for a day soaking up the sun in the park.
A maxi skirt is another piece that works perfectly in a capsule summer wardrobe. Opt for Graham & Spencer's white pleated number and team it with gladiator sandals, a tailored vest and a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses - just add Pimm's, a sunny evening and friends chatting around a barbeque.
