Royal Ascot fashion tips

So Royal Ascot is underway and there's not a strapless dress or a mini skirt in sight. The organisers have made sure of that by revising their dress code this year to ensure that only the smartest dressed racegoers are allowed into the course.

The Royal Enclosure has always had a strict door policy. Hats, not fascinators, must be worn at all times, while dresses and skirts should fall just above the knee or longer and straps on dresses and tops must be at least an inch thick.

But whereas previously you could go without a headpiece in the Grandstand and could show off your shoulders in a strapless number, now that's no longer permitted. Neither are shorts, gentlemen.

The new dress code is a good thing, you might say. Who doesn't love the opportunity to dress up? But it does make choosing a suitable outfit and matching accessories a little more difficult.

Possibly the best option is to choose a classic dress in a block colour. That way you won't be restricted when it comes to shoes, handbags and headpieces.

Pashminas and scarves are an excellent addition to your race day outfit, as they will keep you warm if there's a nip in the air. You may also need a good pair of sunglasses to prevent you from squinting into the afternoon sun while you watch all the sporting action.

When it comes to footwear, you'll want to wear heels to glam up your ensemble, but remember you'll probably be standing for much of the day, so don't go for anything too high. Marc by Marc Jacobs Footwear's Gommone Sandals are perfect.

Of course Royal Ascot is by far the most stylish of meets in the racing calendar, but there's no reason you can't dress up on a regular race day, especially if you have premier admission tickets when smart clothing is a requirement.
