Fashion tips for men over 50

A Polo Ralph Lauren shirt is a wardrobe staple

When you reach a certain age there are items of clothing you simply cannot wear. At the same time, you're not yet a pensioner and you refuse to resort to corduroys and out-of-shape jumpers.

So how do you dress if you're a man over 50? According to the Daily Mail's Liz Hodgkinson, most blokes in their fifth decade of life dress like "tramps".

In her latest column she suggests that bad fashion sense not only makes men look older than they really are, but it also holds them back in the dating game.

And she believes the reason so many men wear outdated clothes is simply because they do not purchase new items often enough, preferring instead to wear their old favourites.

"So many men do not seem to realise that even the sharpest Italian suit will eventually go out of fashion," she stresses.

So if you're a man over 50 what can you do to sharpen up your wardrobe? It's simple; just invest in a few key pieces and you're good to go.

Start with a good quality suit and a few shirts in various colours. You can't go far wrong with Polo Ralph Lauren, as these shirts have an almost timeless appeal.

You'll also need smart casual attire. Try Woolrich's roundhouse worker trousers or some slim fit chinos from Paul Smith Jeans and team them with a classic polo shirt.

One thing you want to avoid in your 50s however is looking too casual. Jeans and a hoodie will just make you look like you're trying to appear younger.

When buying jeans, think carefully about the fit and the colour. Stay away from skinny jeans and light shades and veer towards a straight leg in a dark denim.

And footwear? Sperry's authentic original shoes are perfect for casual looks, but you'll also need one good pair of smart shoes, and Grenson have a great range.

Now all you need to do is get rid of all those outdated items in your wardrobe.
