Original Penguin

Like all good legends, the idea for Original Penguin emerged out of an elegantly wasted evening back in 1955, in New York City. Abbot Pederson, a salesman for an undergarment company in Minneapolis was in New York on business. Whilst in search of a taxi rank after a late night at a bar, Abbot took a wrong turn and found himself outside a taxidermist's shop window, looking at a stuffed penguin. As only a drunk person would, Abbot decided he needed the penguin so bought him and decided to name him Pete. Pete continued to travel home with him where he came to an unfortunate end as his head was knocked off mid-flight. A helpful stewardess offered to help Abbot and removed his tie and wrapped it around Pete's neck in order to secure his head back on. Whilst doing this the stewardess joked that such a 'dapper' penguin deserved to be immortalised or embroidered on a shirt similar to the one Abbot was wearing and so it was from this that the idea for original Penguin clothing was born.

Over 50 years on and Original Penguin is still representing that wholesome Americana preppy look across the globe. Since the brands huge success with the Musington golf shirt back in the 50s, Penguin continued to grow and gained a huge celebrity following from some of the greatest legends of our time, Clint Eastwood, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Dean Martin to name just a few. Since the return of retro styles to mens fashion in 2003, Original Penguin saw a huge revival in popularity which remains to this day as Original Penguin is now sold in luxury department stores worldwide.
